# Remaking the State: source geometry

**Maps reconstructed from published sources.** This register describes the actual geometry used by all 12 chapters and 24 snapshots. Lesson prose, quizzes, typography, colours and interactions remain unchanged. Complete source components and holes are retained; the self-contained atlas uses lossless path packing for delivery.

## Downloadable inputs and licences

- **Edo Domains, c.1862, release v0.1:** [iao, 2025, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.17139791](https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17139791), [source repository](https://github.com/geoiao/edo-domains), [GeoPackage download](https://github.com/geoiao/edo-domains/releases/download/v0.1/edo-domains-gpkg.zip). CC0 1.0; full licence in `edo-CC0-1.0.txt`. The published dataset associates historical village-domain records from Rekihaku with MAFF 2015 agricultural-settlement polygons. These are published reconstructed holdings, not cadastral surveys from each chapter year. The atlas imports the EPSG:4326 source table (the Chōfu file has only EPSG:4612, converted with PROJ to WGS84) and dissolves each selected domain’s village polygons. It retains enclaves, islands and holes; Chikuzen combines Fukuoka and Kurume. Chōshū combines Hagi/Yamaguchi with Chōfu, Kiyosue, Tokuyama and Iwakuni, following [Yamaguchi Prefecture’s account of the main and four branch domains](https://bunkazai.pref.yamaguchi.lg.jp/sp/support/theme/tyousyuu/tnaka.html). All 16 selected source domains are exported separately as `edo-*.geojson`, each below 20 MB.
- **Cliopatria v0.2.1:** [Seshat source and documentation](https://github.com/Seshat-Global-History-Databank/cliopatria/tree/v0.2.1), CC BY 4.0. Exact source record numbers, polity names and year intervals are recorded per geometry. Annual polity records are not assumed to describe every event within a year. The complete pinned input is acquired through the central source lock.
- **Natural Earth:** [v5.1.2](https://github.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/tree/v5.1.2) countries, administrative regions, islands and rivers; [v4.1.0](https://github.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/tree/v4.1.0) disputed-area archive for the pre-2020 Karabakh perimeter. Public domain. Coastline/admin reference vintages remain explicit and are not called period surveys. The selected administrative source extract is `natural-earth-admin1.geojson`.
- **Former NKAO:** [International Crisis Group geographic source](https://github.com/CrisisGroup/nk-data-repo/blob/main/geodata/nagorno-karabakh-borders.geojson), GPL-3.0. Original data are `nkao-crisisgroup.geojson`; full licence is `nkao-GPL-3.0.txt`. `former-nkao-GPL.geojson` is a separately identified derivative under the same licence. It dissolves only the seven source features explicitly labelled “former NKAO”, ignoring their later control categories. Adjacent districts and the Lachin corridor are excluded. This is a retrospective geographic record of the former oblast, not a new 1988 survey.
- **Treaty chronology:** [joint Japanese–Russian compendium](https://www.mofa.go.jp/region/europe/russia/territory/edition92/preface.html), [original 1855 treaty provision](https://www.mofa.go.jp/region/europe/russia/territory/edition92/period1.html), and [World and Japan treaty collection](https://worldjpn.net/documents/indices/docs1/index-ENG.html). These provide geographic identity and chronology; their prose is not reproduced as map data.
- **European states:** already-reviewed full source geometry from the Cold War atlas is copied into this atlas’s own source bank, with original source records and licences. Imports include East/West Germany, Berlin, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. [UNESCO’s Baltic Way record](https://www.unesco.org/en/memory-world/baltic-way-human-chain-linking-three-states-their-drive-freedom) supports the human-chain route diagram.

`source-downloads.json` records URLs, byte lengths and SHA-256 hashes for the additional acquired inputs. Source bank files are portable GeoJSON, split below 20 MB; their hashes and actual anchor results are in `validation.json`. The parent source manifest is the authoritative per-snapshot and per-chapter binding register.

## Geometry and date decisions

| Chapters / states | Geometry decision | Interpretation and remaining source limit |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3; Japan 1840–1868 | Published c.1862 domain holdings replace prefecture-shaped inventions. Complete dated Cliopatria polities provide the surrounding countries. | c.1862 is the nearest acquired domain reference; earlier/later holdings may differ. Underlying village proxies contain small source overlaps/misalignment. Canonical geometry retains the published reconstruction rather than silently redrawing it. |
| 1–3; shogunal lands | Sado uses actual island coastline; Kanto, Kyoto, Osaka/Nara and Kai use named administrative regions. Nagasaki/Hakodate remain point symbols. | Regional locators identify areas associated with shogunal holdings. They do not claim every village was direct shogunal land; labels say “regional locator”. |
| 2–3; Outer Manchuria | Qing 1857/1860 difference split along the complete Natural Earth Amur river. The 1858 north-bank transfer is applied to both Qing and Russia in the 1859 state. | The annual source delays both cessions to 1860. The explicit river reconstruction separates the two stages. Ussuri uses the connected Vladivostok region, excluding unrelated tiny western alignment slivers. |
| 3–4; Boshin and Satsuma wars | Actual Chōshū holdings and named northern/Kagoshima–Kumamoto–Miyazaki administrative regions. | These are rebellion/campaign-region hatches, excluded from sovereignty calculations. They are not uniform military-control polygons. |
| 4–6; islands and imperial expansion | Whole source Ryukyu, Sakhalin and Kuril island components; the 50° Karafuto partition; dated Japan/Taiwan/Korea source polities. | Published treaty dates choose the applicable island groups. The mislabelled Amami components, Daito and Senkaku/Diaoyu islets are excluded from the pre-1879 Ryukyu reference. The 1911 Japan source is a nearby post-annexation reference for late 1910. |
| 6; foreign leases | Complete 1898 Russian, German and British imperial components for Kwantung, Jiaozhou and Weihaiwei. | Kwantung is Cliopatria record 12179; the broader 1900–1904 Manchurian occupation record 12185 is explicitly rejected as a lease source. No clipped rectangular edge is used. |
| 7–8; Soviet republics / bloc | Full successor administrative reference units for the 15 republics; source-dated Germany, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. | These constitutional/geographic references are not newly surveyed historical borders. Crimea/Sevastopol are in Ukraine throughout 1964–2000. The Baikonur lease is never Russian sovereign territory. Berlin is a separately labelled four-power city before October 1990. |
| 9–12; post-Soviet states | Full geographic republic outlines, Czech/Slovak and Yugoslav succession variants. | Small later border demarcations are not represented as precise historical changes. Existing snapshot dates choose the political identity. |
| 8–12; Caucasus and Transnistria | Former NKAO from the named Crisis Group source; wider Karabakh from the archived pre-2020 NE outline; complete NE Chechnya, Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Transnistria references; Bender uses its separate published municipal polygon. | Named conflict regions, with thematic hatching and no false sovereignty count. Karabakh’s 2018 edition is the closest acquired ceasefire-era outline, with minor 2016 changes unresolved. Abkhazia/South Ossetia are full-region references and do not assert uniform 1990s control or conceal pre-2008 enclaves. |
| All chapters | Existing named event pins, ports, arrows and rail/Baltic Way lines retain their semantic roles. | Pins and port circles are location symbols; directional arrows and rail lines are schematic named-place connections, not surveyed footprints or exact engineering alignments. Their [chapter evidence register](event-source-register.md) and coordinates are explicit in the manifest. |

## Reproduction and review

From the repository root:

```sh
python3 atlases/transitions/acquire_geometry.py
python3 atlases/transitions/extract_domains.py
python3 atlases/transitions/rebuild_geometry.py
python3 atlases/transitions/verify_geometry.py
python3 engine/build.py atlases/transitions
node engine/validate.js atlases/transitions
node tests/run-qc.js transitions
```

Ordinary atlas builds use committed geometry derivatives and do not download anything. Full regeneration uses the central pinned source files plus the Cold War and WW2 source manifests; `rebuild_geometry.py` copies the imported canonical features into this atlas’s own portable files. Python geometry dependencies are pinned in the shared engine requirements; full Edo extraction additionally uses pyproj for the Chōfu EPSG:4612 input. `extract_domains.py` reads the original GeoPackages with SQLite and WKB, without GDAL.

Checks cover every active zone/front and chapter footer, complete sourced quiz targets, named place inclusions/exclusions, treaty-stage timing, source licence records, finite projections and unchanged prose/theme. `validation.json` records their results. The source register distinguishes published geometry, nearby-date references, reconstructions and cartographic symbols; it does not transfer responsibility for selecting or interpreting a source to its publisher.
