10 Oct 1911 — A bomb goes off early in a revolutionary cell in Hankou; the plotters’ membership lists are seized, and the New Army soldiers on them mutiny that night rather than wait to be shot. Within six weeks fifteen provinces declare for a republic. The dynasty that had ruled since 1644 is ended by an accident with a fuse.
