1911 — The Wuchang rising
10 Oct 1911 — A bomb goes off early in a revolutionary cell in Hankou; the plotters’ membership lists are seized, and the New Army soldiers on them mutiny that night rather than wait to be shot. Within six weeks fifteen provinces declare for a republic. The dynasty that had ruled since 1644 is ended by an accident with a fuse.

1945 — The Chungking talks
28 Aug–10 Oct 1945 — Mao flies to Chiang’s capital under American escort; the two men toast each other and sign a unity communiqué neither believes. General Marshall’s year of mediation follows, and fails the same way: both parties would rather risk everything than share an army.
