The Somme, 1 July

Map showing The Somme, 1 July — The Great War, 1914–1918
SITE OF MEMORY · THE GREAT WAR, 1914–1918

1 Jul 1916 — In one day the British Army loses 57,470 men, 19,240 of them killed — the bloodiest day in its history, many in the first hour, walking toward uncut wire. The battle grinds on to November for 10 km of mud. Remember the first day as its own event.

This is one scene of Chapter 5 — The Furnaces in The Great War, 1914–1918.
