Caffa

Map showing Caffa — The Mongol Empire, 1206–1294
SITE OF MEMORY · THE MONGOL EMPIRE, 1206–1294

1347 — Plague, carried down the same yam roads and sea lanes the Pax Mongolica opened, reaches this Genoese port on the Black Sea during a Horde siege. Ships fleeing to Sicily carry it into Europe: the Black Death. The exchange that moved silk and ideas moved this too. Remember its dead — perhaps a third of Europe.

This is one scene of Chapter 12 — The Long Shadow in The Mongol Empire, 1206–1294.
