Diaoyu fortress

Aug 1259 — Möngke, Great Khan, dies of dysentery or wounds beneath a Song mountain fort his cavalry cannot touch. Every front in the empire stops: Hülegü turns back from Syria with most of his army, and the succession war that follows breaks the empire into four.
This is one scene of Chapter 10 — Khubilai and the Song in The Mongol Empire, 1206–1294.
