Jan 1263 — Berke’s Golden Horde routs Hülegü’s army on the frozen river; thousands drown as the ice breaks. Mongol has killed Mongol in open war. Berke, a Muslim khan, mourns: “Mongols are killed by Mongol swords. If we were united, we would have conquered all of the world.”
