Burundi, another ancient kingdom of the Great Lakes, was ruled by Germany and then by Belgium as part of Ruanda-Urundi. It became independent as a monarchy on 1 July 1962, the same day as Rwanda, and its politics were soon marked by conflict between Hutu and Tutsi.
