What was Curaçao before it was Curaçao? Below, every era of this land in the Maps of History atlases — who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed — each line linked to the dated map that shows it. Modern borders stand in as an honest approximation; every atlas says so on the map itself.
Curaçao · Haiti and Kenya independence
Curaçao, a Dutch island and slave-trading port, saw a revolt in August 1795 led by an enslaved man called Tula, who cited the freedom proclaimed in Saint-Domingue and revolutionary France. The revolt was crushed and Tula executed, but he is remembered on the island as a hero. Slavery in the Dutch Caribbean ended only in 1863.
