Palestine (West Bank and Gaza) · Refugee crises
About 700,000 to 750,000 Palestinians fled or were driven from their homes in the war of 1948, many to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, which Egypt and Jordan then controlled, and to neighbouring states. The UN created UNRWA for them in December 1949, and the 1951 Convention placed them outside UNHCR’s mandate, a separate regime that still exists.
