Saint Lucia · Haiti and Kenya independence
Saint Lucia changed hands between France and Britain more than a dozen times. In 1795–96 formerly enslaved people freed by the French Republic fought British troops in what the British called the Brigands’ War, a struggle linked to the wider revolution in the French Caribbean. Britain held the island from 1803, and it became independent in 1979.
