23 Feb 1944 — On Red Army Day, NKVD troops began deporting the Chechens and Ingush, about 496,000 people, to Kazakhstan and Kirghizia within a week. Between about 100,000 and 200,000 of them died in transit and in the first years of exile.

— Royal Indian Navy mutiny
18–23 Feb 1946 — Ratings of the Royal Indian Navy strike and seize 78 ships over pay, food and insult; the tricolour and the crescent fly together from the mastheads. London reads the signal: the sword arm of the Raj is no longer sure.
