18 Jul 1863 — The 54th Massachusetts, one of the first Black regiments, leads the assault on Charleston harbor’s battery and loses nearly half its strength; Colonel Shaw is buried with his men. The courage is an argument — by war’s end 180,000 Black soldiers wear Union blue.
