Daily history map puzzle

Which Year?

The year is hidden. Read the borders and the names, then guess. Click the map to zoom.Tap the map to zoom.

Type a year. Press B for years before Christ, A for years AD.

    How to play

Every day there is one historical map, the same for everyone. Guess its year in six tries. Each guess tells you whether the map is earlier or later, and how close you are: within 100, 25, 5 or 1 years.

After three guesses you learn which atlas the map comes from; after five, a place in its story is pinned on the map. The full rules.

    Where the maps come from

Each puzzle is a moment from one of the 21 interactive atlases on Maps of History, from the Roman Republic to the Arab Spring: who held which land, on that date. When you finish, open the same map in its atlas and read what happened.
