AI history chat: ask any history question and see the answer on a map
Maps of History is a chat for history. Ask a question in plain words, such as which countries were invaded in 1939 or how the Roman Empire grew, and the guide answers in a few clear sentences while it draws the answer on a live map: the borders of that year, the battles and cities it mentions, and the routes of armies. You can then zoom in, move through the years, and ask a follow-up question.
An example conversation
You: Which countries were invaded in Europe in 1939? Show them on the map.
History guide:
In 1939, four European countries were invaded:
- Czechoslovakia: German troops entered Prague on 15 March. Bohemia and Moravia became a German protectorate, and Slovakia a German client state.
- Albania: Italy invaded on 7 April and joined it to the Italian crown.
- Poland: Germany invaded on 1 September, and the Soviet Union from the east on 17 September. Warsaw surrendered on 28 September, and the two powers divided the country.
- Finland: the Soviet Union attacked on 30 November, which began the Winter War.
Britain and France declared war on Germany on 3 September because of the attack on Poland. The Baltic states had to accept Soviet bases that autumn, but the Soviet Union occupied them only in June 1940.
The map shows the borders of September 1939 with the four invasions drawn on it. Sources:

Questions about the AI history chat
Is there a ChatGPT for history?
Maps of History is a history chat in that spirit, built for history: you ask a question in plain words, and the answer comes with a map. The guide draws the borders of the date you ask about, marks battles, cities and armies, and links the guided atlas chapters it draws on. Maps of History is independent and is not affiliated with OpenAI.
How is it different from a general AI chatbot?
A general chatbot answers from memory in text. Here every map comes from sourced border data (Cliopatria, from 3400 BC to 2024, with our audited corrections) and from 21 guided atlases written to a historian's standard. The guide says when a period is thinly documented, and the map shows exactly which borders it means.
Is the AI history chat accurate?
The borders and the atlas chapters are sourced, and the guide is told to stay close to them. It is still an AI language model, so it can make mistakes: check important facts against the atlas chapters and sources it links, as you would with any study aid.
Is it free?
You can start free: open the map and ask your first questions without paying. The first suggested question, about the invasions of 1939, is answered from a checked script. Paid plans give more questions and every atlas.
Can it help with IB, AP, GCSE or A-level history?
Yes. Use it to see a period on the map before you read about it, to check where events happened, and to revise causes and consequences. The atlases carry study notes for IB History, and the AP and IB pages map each course unit to the right maps.
Which periods and places does it cover?
The world map covers every year from 3400 BC to 2024. The 21 atlases go deeper: Rome, the Crusades, the Mongols, the Age of Revolutions, the Industrial Revolution, the American Civil War, both world wars, the Russian and Chinese revolutions, India, the Cold War, the decolonization of Africa and more.
