The Mukden Incident

18 Sep 1931 — Kwantung Army officers bomb their own railway, blame China, and overrun Manchuria in five months — against Tokyo’s orders and to national applause. Chiang, mid-campaign against the soviets, orders non-resistance and appeals to the League. Its report changes nothing. The world’s security system fails its first great test here.
This is one scene of Chapter 6 — The Soviet Republic and the Encirclements in China in Revolution, 1911–1949.
