Lewis chessmen (1831)
On the Norse and Aztecs map as “Uig — the Lewis chessmen”
1831 — A hoard of 93 carved pieces, including 78 chessmen, was found near Uig on the Isle of Lewis. Carved around 1150–1200, mostly from walrus ivory, probably in Trondheim, they show how far Greenland’s chief export travelled into the luxury goods of Europe.
