The influenza pandemic
1918-19 — The “Spanish” flu — one hypothesis traces a mutation through the base camp here at Étaples — kills at least 50 million people worldwide, more than the war itself, most of them in the colonized world. The war’s crowded camps and troopships carried it everywhere. Remember them too.
