Hungary’s ruin

1241–42 — The richest city of Hungary falls to siege engines at Christmas; the countryside starves through the occupation winter. Rogerius, an archdeacon who lived it, calls his account the Carmen Miserabile — the Song of Misery. Perhaps a fifth of the kingdom’s people die. Remember them.
This is one scene of Chapter 6 — The Storm on the West in The Mongol Empire, 1206–1294.
