Belize, on the map of history
What was Belize before it was Belize? Below, every era of this land in the Maps of History collection — who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed — each line linked to the dated map that shows it. Modern borders stand in as an honest approximation; every atlas says so on the map itself.

British Honduras (Belize) · The American Civil War, 1861–1865
British Honduras — mahogany camps and a colonial port — became, after 1865, one of the refuges of the irreconcilables: a few thousand ex-Confederates emigrated to plant cotton and sugar in Toledo district rather than live under the Union. Most drifted home within a decade, defeated by rain, debt and homesickness. The empty gesture of exile is its own verdict on the Lost Cause: there was no elsewhere.
