The Faroe Islands · Norse and Aztecs
Small, windswept islands halfway between Norway and Iceland, settled by Norse farmers in the ninth century after Irish hermits had left. The Faroes were the first stepping stone on the sea road west, and sailing directions told mariners to pass south of them on the way to Greenland.
