Trinidad & Tobago · Haiti and Kenya independence
Trinidad, Spanish until Britain seized it in 1797, became a late sugar colony worked by enslaved Africans and, after abolition, by indentured labourers from India. Its first prime minister, Eric Williams, had written Capitalism and Slavery (1944), a classic argument about the profits of the Caribbean system. Trinidad and Tobago became independent on 31 August 1962.
