Withdrawal of Soviet experts (1960)
On the Mao’s China map as “Lanzhou: the experts leave”
Jul–Aug 1960 — Khrushchev recalls all 1,390 Soviet experts within a month and cancels hundreds of contracts; many take their blueprints with them. At Lanzhou the gaseous-diffusion plant for enriching uranium is left unfinished. Chinese engineers complete it, and it produces bomb-grade uranium in January 1964.
