Liu Shaoqi’s Hunan inspection (1961)
On the Mao’s China map as “Liu Shaoqi goes home”
Apr–May 1961 — Liu spends 44 days in rural Hunan, including his home village of Tanzichong in Huaminglou, and finds empty granaries, starving neighbours and peasants who say the disaster was “three parts nature, seven parts man”. He returns convinced that the mess halls must close. The visit turned a loyal deputy into a critic.
