Third Front at Panzhihua (1965)
On the Mao’s China map as “Panzhihua”
1965 — Under the Third Front, a steel city is built from nothing in the gorges of south-western Sichuan, chosen because its iron ore lay far from any coast or border an enemy could reach. Workers and whole factories are moved inland to build it; the Chengdu–Kunming railway that serves it opens in 1970.
