Mao’s China · TURNING POINT ·
Five-Anti Campaign (1952)
On the Mao’s China map as “The Five-Anti campaign”
Jan–Jun 1952 — Shanghai’s private firms are investigated for five “poisons”: bribery, tax evasion, theft of state property, cheating on contracts and stealing state economic secrets. Nearly every firm is found guilty to some degree and fined; many owners are humiliated at mass meetings and hundreds take their own lives. Private capitalism survives only in name.
