Russification of the Baltic provinces (1887–93)
On the Russian Revolution map as “Dorpat becomes Yuriev”
1887–93 — The Baltic German university town is renamed Yuriev in 1893, and in the 1890s Russian replaces German as the language of its lectures, as it already has in Baltic schools, courts and offices. Russification alienates the loyal Baltic German elite and, in time, the Estonians and Latvians, many of whom had at first welcomed a check on their German landlords.
