Siege of Geok Tepe (1881)
On the Russian Revolution map as “Geok Tepe”
12/24 Jan 1881 — General Skobelev storms Dengil-Tepe, the Turkmen fortress at Geok Tepe, after a three-week siege. His own report counts 6,500 dead in the fortress and 8,000, fleeing civilians among them, killed in the pursuit, and no independent count exists. Turkmen remember it as a national tragedy, and this memorial marks its dead.
