Kolyma Gulag camps (1932–53)
On the Stalin’s Soviet Union map as “Kolyma”
1932–1953 — Dalstroi, the NKVD trust that ruled the Kolyma region, used prisoners to mine gold in permafrost, shipping them in through the port of Magadan. The writer Varlam Shalamov survived years there to describe it. In 1953 Dalstroi lost its camps and its territory became a normal province.
