White Sea–Baltic Canal (1931–33)
On the Stalin’s Soviet Union map as “The White Sea Canal”
1931–1933 — Prisoners dug the 227-km White Sea–Baltic Canal in twenty months, largely by hand. Official records count about 12,000 deaths; other estimates run to 25,000 or more. The canal proved too shallow for most ships, yet it became the Gulag’s model project.
