On the Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia map as “Aizu-Wakamatsu”
Oct–Nov 1868 — The most loyal of the Tokugawa houses holds its castle town for a month against the new government’s armies. Its surrender on 6 November breaks the northern alliance. Aizu’s defeated samurai were later resettled on poor land at the northern tip of Honshū.
