Siege of Kumamoto Castle (1877)

On the Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia map as “Kumamoto Castle”

Feb–Apr 1877 — About 4,000 government troops, many of them conscripted farmers’ sons, hold Kumamoto Castle for some fifty days against Saigō’s samurai army. Their stand showed that a conscript army could defeat the warrior class at its own profession.
