Hokkaido colonisation and the Ainu (1869)

On the Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia map as “Sapporo and the Ainu”

1869 onward — The government renames Ezo as Hokkaido and plans Sapporo as its capital. Settlers and soldier-farmers arrive by the tens of thousands, and Ainu hunting and fishing grounds are taken. An 1899 “protection” law kept the Ainu as wards of the state until 1997.
