Great Tenmei famine (1782–88)
On the Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia map as “The Tenmei famine”
1782–1788 — Cold summers and the 1783 eruption of Mount Asama ruin harvests, and the north-east suffers worst. Hundreds of thousands die of hunger and disease across Japan. Domains hoarded rice for their own people, and the shogunate had no national machinery to move food to the starving.
