MAP OF THE BASIN OF MEXICO IN 1428

What was Chile before it was Chile? Below, every era of this land in the Maps of History atlases — who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed — each line linked to the dated map that shows it. Modern borders stand in as an honest approximation; every atlas says so on the map itself.

Chalco · Norse and Aztecs

A confederation of towns in the southeast of the basin with rich chinampas and maize lands, which resisted the Triple Alliance for decades before its conquest around 1465. Its farms made it the granary of the basin. In 1521 Chalco joined the Spaniards against Tenochtitlan, one of many former subjects to change sides.

Chile · Industrial Revolution

Chile’s victory in the War of the Pacific (1879–84) gave it the nitrate deserts of the Atacama, the world’s main source of nitrogen for fertiliser and explosives. Nitrate taxes funded about half of the state’s revenue, until synthetic ammonia, first made in Germany in 1913, began to undercut the trade after the First World War.
