Finland · Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia
Finland, neutral under a treaty with Moscow from 1948, gave its name to “Finlandisation”, the policy of a small democracy keeping its freedom by avoiding anything that might anger a powerful neighbour. When its trade with the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 it fell into a deep recession. Finland joined the European Union in 1995.

Finland (Grand Duchy) · Russian Revolution
Won its independence from collapsing Russia in December 1917, then fought a savage civil war in 1918 — Red workers against a German-backed White army — whose victors ran camps in which thousands of Reds died. Finland stayed free, wary of its eastern neighbour ever after, a wariness the Winter War of 1939 would justify.

Finland (Russian Empire) · WWI
A Russian grand duchy that took the empire’s collapse as its exit: independence in December 1917, then a savage three-month civil war — Mannerheim’s Whites, with a German division landed at Hanko, against the Red Guards — that killed some 36,000 people in a nation of three million, most not in battle: terror shootings on both sides, then White prison camps where over 12,000 died of hunger and disease in the summer of 1918. Sovereign, scarred, and briefly headed for a German king until Germany’s own collapse made it a republic — thereafter permanently watchful of its eastern border.

Finland · Stalin’s Soviet Union
Finland had been part of the Russian Empire until 1917, and Stalin wanted its border pushed away from Leningrad. When the Finns refused, the Red Army attacked in November 1939 and suffered heavy losses in the Winter War before Finland ceded Karelia in March 1940. Finland fought again alongside Germany in 1941–44, lost Petsamo, and afterwards kept its democracy and independence by accepting Soviet influence on its foreign policy.

Finland · Road to WW2
A nation of four million that fought the Soviet Union to a standstill through the winter of 1939–40, losing Karelia but keeping its state — the only Pact-protocol target that survived as an independent country. Its performance fed Berlin’s fatal underestimate of the Red Army; its resentment carried it into Barbarossa as a “co-belligerent” with its own strictly limited war.

Three wars in six years: attacked by the USSR (Winter War, 1939–40), fighting alongside Germany to regain its land (1941–44), then fighting Germany to expel it (1944–45). Finland ended the war independent — unique among Hitler’s allies — but permanently wary of its eastern neighbor.

Finland · Refugee crises
Finland fought the Soviet Union twice and lost Karelia both times, in 1940 and 1944. About 410,000 Karelians, one Finn in nine, chose to leave rather than live under Soviet rule, and the Land Acquisition Act of 1945 gave them farms carved from state, church and private land. A poor democracy integrated a huge displaced population within a few years.
