Nicaragua, on the map of history
What was Nicaragua before it was Nicaragua? Below, every era of this land in the Maps of History collection — who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed — each line linked to the dated map that shows it. Modern borders stand in as an honest approximation; every atlas says so on the map itself.

Nicaragua · The Cold War, 1945–1991
The Sandinistas’ 1979 revolution ended a forty-year US client dynasty; Washington’s answer — the Contra war, mined harbors, and a scandal that reached the White House — made this small country the last full proxy battlefield of the era. It voted the Sandinistas out in 1990, and the Cold War in Latin America ended at a ballot box, for once.
| AUG 1945 | US-aligned states — the opening position |
| DEC 1979 | Soviet-aligned states |
| DEC 1991 | Non-aligned & neutral |
