Venezuela, on the map of history
What was Venezuela before it was Venezuela? Below, every era of this land in the Maps of History collection — who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed — each line linked to the dated map that shows it. Modern borders stand in as an honest approximation; every atlas says so on the map itself.
Venezuela · The Age of Revolutions, 1775–1848
The revolution’s furnace: first republic (1811) destroyed by earthquake and war; the “war to the death” years; Boves’s royalist llaneros, then Páez’s patriot ones — civil war inside independence. Carabobo (1821) freed it; caudillos inherited it. Bolívar’s birthplace gave the age its greatest liberator and its clearest warning about what wars of liberation leave behind.
