Vietnam, on the map of history
What was Vietnam before it was Vietnam? Below, every era of this land in the Maps of History collection — who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed — each line linked to the dated map that shows it. Modern borders stand in as an honest approximation; every atlas says so on the map itself.
Đại Việt & Champa (mod. Vietnam) · The Mongol Empire, 1206–1294
Đại Việt absorbed three invasions (1258, 1285, 1287–88) by refusing decisive battle — capitals burned before the enemy arrived, heat and dysentery left to do garrison duty — then drowned the Yuan fleet on the staked ebb-tide of Bạch Đằng. It accepted nominal tribute and kept its own laws: unconquered, and the founding epic of Vietnamese resistance was written.

Vietnam · The War Room — WW2, 1936–1945
French Indochina: Vichy-administered, Japanese-occupied, famine-struck (1944–45, perhaps a million dead). Ho Chi Minh’s Viet Minh, armed partly by US officers against Japan, declared independence in September 1945 — quoting Jefferson. Three decades of war followed.

Vietnam · The Cold War, 1945–1991
Fought thirty years against three powers — Japan, France, America — under one leadership, and won, at a cost of perhaps three million dead (Ch. 7). Unified in 1975, it promptly fought communist Cambodia and communist China: the era’s clearest proof that nationalism wore ideology like a uniform. Its postwar poverty and 1986 market turn mirror China’s arc in miniature.
