23 Jul 1914 — Vienna hands Serbia a 48-hour ultimatum written to be refused. Serbia accepts nearly all of it; Austria-Hungary declares war anyway on the 28th, and shells Belgrade the next day.

23 Jul 1952 — Gamal Abdel Nasser’s officers depose the king. Arab nationalism has a capital and a champion; within four years he will nationalize the Suez Canal and defy three empires at once.

— Bizerte crisis
19–23 Jul 1961 — Bourguiba blockades the French naval base at Bizerte; French paratroopers break the siege. Tunisia’s official count is 630 dead, and some estimates exceed 1,000. France finally leaves the base in October 1963.
