1914 — The ultimatum

23 Jul 1914 — Vienna hands Serbia a 48-hour ultimatum written to be refused. Serbia accepts nearly all of it; Austria-Hungary declares war anyway on the 28th, and shells Belgrade the next day.

23 Jul 1952 — Gamal Abdel Nasser’s officers depose the king. Arab nationalism has a capital and a champion; within four years he will nationalize the Suez Canal and defy three empires at once.
