Evacuation of East Prussia (1945)
On the Refugee crises map as “Flight across the lagoon”
Jan–Apr 1945 — Cut off by the Soviet advance, East Prussian civilians cross the frozen Vistula Lagoon on foot and by cart to reach Pillau, where the German navy carries them west by sea. Columns on the ice were strafed and many broke through it. The German exodus began as flight, months before any expulsion order.
