Reprisals on the Grand Trunk Road (1857)
On the Indian independence map as “The Grand Trunk Road — the reprisals”
Jun–Sep 1857 — Columns marching up the road from Allahabad under Neill and Renaud hanged suspects without trial and burned villages; after Kanpur, prisoners were humiliated before execution, and the sack of Delhi killed thousands of its people. No one counted the Indian dead of the suppression. Remember them.
