Beidaihe conference (1958)
On the Mao’s China map as “Beidaihe”
17–30 Aug 1958 — At the seaside resort the Politburo endorses the communes and doubles the year’s steel target to 10.7 million tonnes, twice the output of 1957. Within weeks some 90 million people are feeding backyard furnaces with pots, pans and tools; most of what came out was brittle pig iron of little use.
