Mao’s visit to Xushui (1958)
On the Mao’s China map as “Xushui”
4 Aug 1958 — Mao visits Xushui county, Hebei, whose leaders report a harvest so large they say they cannot store it. “What will you do with so much grain?” he asks, and muses that peasants might eat five meals a day. Boasts like these became the basis for the next procurement quotas.
