Jiabiangou labour camp (1957–61)
On the Mao’s China map as “Jiabiangou”
1957–61 — About 3,000 people labelled rightists in Gansu are sent to a labour farm on desert land near Jiuquan. When food ran out in 1960 they ate seeds, leaves and bark; by its closure in 1961 about 2,000–2,500 had died and only some 500–600 survived. The writer Yang Xianhui and the film-maker Wang Bing recorded the survivors.
