Beidahuang rightist labour farms (1958)
On the Mao’s China map as “The Great Northern Wilderness”
1958 — Some 1,500 rightists from Beijing ministries, newspapers and the army are sent to state reclamation farms on the Heilongjiang marshes, among them the novelist Ding Ling and the poet Ai Qing. Labour on the frontier was meant to be punishment and cure at once: reform through work.
