Kham rebellion at Lithang (1956)
On the Mao’s China map as “Lithang”
Feb–Mar 1956 — When collectivisation and the disarming of Tibetan households reach Kham, revolt spreads across what is now western Sichuan. Thousands of rebels and villagers shelter in Lithang’s great monastery; after a siege the PLA bombs it from the air. Refugees carry the revolt west into Tibet itself.
