Mao’s China · TURNING POINT ·
Incorporation of Xinjiang into the PRC (1949–55)
On the Mao’s China map as “Xinjiang”
25 Sep 1949 / 1 Oct 1955 — Xinjiang’s Nationalist garrison surrenders without a fight, and Wang Zhen’s army arrives that autumn. Demobilised soldiers become the Production and Construction Corps (1954), a farming army that settles Han migrants in a region where Han Chinese were about 6 percent of the people; in 1955 it becomes the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
