What was Greenland before it was Greenland? Below, every era of this land in the Maps of History atlases — who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed — each line linked to the dated map that shows it. Modern borders stand in as an honest approximation; every atlas says so on the map itself.

Greenland — the ice sheet and outer coasts · Norse and Aztecs

Most of Greenland is an ice sheet up to 3,200 metres high, whose layers record the climate of the past hundred thousand years and more; the cores drilled at Summit and Crête are among the main sources of this atlas. Its outer coasts were too cold for Norse farming, though the Inuit hunted along many of them.
