Honduras, on the map of history
What was Honduras before it was Honduras? Below, every era of this land in the Maps of History collection — who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed — each line linked to the dated map that shows it. Modern borders stand in as an honest approximation; every atlas says so on the map itself.

Honduras closes the filibuster story: William Walker, the “grey-eyed man of destiny” who had made himself president of Nicaragua to extend slavery southward, was captured here and shot by Honduran authorities at Trujillo in September 1860 — six weeks before Lincoln’s election. The expansionist slave empire of Southern imagination died on this coast before the war for the existing one began.
